Whilst much energy goes into collecting information and analysing business issues, often considerably less is directed toward taking action. When action is initiated, for example through a predetermined strategy or a response to external factors, others in the organisation may underestimate the threat, disagree with the assessment, or are simply too overwhelmed to take action.
Such responses are not uncommon and require executives and senior leaders to engage with their immediate direct-report teams and others to:
- Explain the bigger picture situation
- Set a clear direction or response
- Identify and prioritise obstacles to achieving that direction
- Develop a short to medium-term action plan
